Sheriffs are elected politicians. Each major settlement is required, as per The Contract, to have one sheriff. His/her responsibilities include maintaining the defenses and peace within the town walls. Their influence can extend outside of the towns, but limited resources mitigate their reach.
Sheriffs are often in conflict with the ‘state police’ force – The Order of St. Cuthbert. Their roles as law enforcement overlap, as do their jurisdiction. Usually, conflicts over jurisdiction are settled by Judges.
